New York City
The Policing Project assisted the New York Police Department (NYPD) with engaging the community around the department’s body-worn camera program. To ensure broad-based engagement, the Policing Project designed a brief online questionnaire anyone can take in order to share views on key policy questions. In addition, organizations or individuals who wish to upload additional written comments can do so by using the online comment portal.
At the end of the public input process, the Policing Project worked with the NYPD and prepared a public report that summarized the feedback received, as well as the NYPD’s response, explaining how the department adjusted its policy in response to the feedback it received, and why.
The NYPD approached the Policing Project after learning about our efforts in Camden (you can read the Camden report here). Our hope is that as other departments become familiar with these initiatives, this sort of engagement will become a routine part of police department policymaking.
