Overview

The Policing Project’s primers aim to facilitate informed and accurate public debate around one of the more complex—and rapidly changing—areas of policing: the use of biometric technologies. In each of our primers in this series we explore four questions about a particular type of biometric technology:

  1. How are police using this technology?

  2. How does the technology work?

  3. How accurate is the technology?

  4. Are there reasons why the public should be concerned?

Our third primer covers Rapid DNA, a technology that dramatically reduces the amount of time needed to process forensic DNA evidence, but with few safeguards, standards, or regulations.
