Ian Mance

Ian is Senior Counsel* at the Policing Project. Previously, he worked on civil rights litigation and criminal justice policy in North Carolina, representing plaintiffs in cases involving wrongful arrest, excessive force, unlawful searches, and other constitutional violations. Ian has obtained significant recoveries for victims of civil rights abuses and worked with advocates, researchers, and policymakers to advance reforms in policing practices, including efforts to address racial profiling and improve the collection and analysis of police data. He has also represented individuals seeking relief from criminal convictions and lengthy prison sentences and has secured freedom or reduced sentences for multiple people, including two previously sentenced to life without parole.

Before joining the Policing Project, Ian worked with Emancipate NC, the UNC School of Government, the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, and the ACLU-NC. He is from Charleston, SC, and is a graduate of Appalachian State University and the University of North Carolina School of Law.
